This Sunday's our Bake & Take Cookie Exchange Day!

What says Christmas cheer better than a beautiful plate of homemade Christmas cookies, fudge, candy, and maybe even a slice or two of pumpkin bread? Well, if you are like so many others these days, you don't have the time to bake all day and all night to create all those delicious varieties of goodies that we love to give and receive during the holidays. We have an idea that might help. Take the time to bake one variety of cookie or candy and bring it to the church to share (at least six dozen, please). Everyone is then welcome to purchase a variety of cookies for $4 per dozen. All money collected will be donated to the Carroll County Senior Center. We always look forward to our annual Christmas Cookie Bake and Take Exchange event! Let's bake up a storm and make this year a great success!

Every Tuesday night we happily feed around 100 people in Green Forest. The majority of them are not members of our church. This is wonderful outreach! Tomorrow, November 22, we hope to feed a lot more! It's our annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Green Forest United Methodist Church and we are cooking up a storm here in our church kitchen. Many thanks to Jennifer Wellborn, Barbara French and everyone who is helping to cook, and bringing desserts. We do need help, though. We need people to help serve and clean this Tuesday night starting at around 4:30 pm. Please come and be the hands and feet of Christ to people in our community!

Green Forest Community Thanksgiving Service

The Green Forest United Methodist Church will host the annual Community Thanksgiving Service sponsored by the GF Ministerial Alliance on Sunday, November 20 at 6:00 pm. Everyone is encouraged and invited to attend. Area pastors and vocalists will share in the service. Please bring a non-perishable or a canned good to help restock the food pantries in Green Forest. There is a lot of need during the holidays.

Tea Parties in honor of Mary Brizzi

We had so much fun at our first Tea Party last night. We laughed, we ate some great finger food, we visited, we ate some more, played a get-to-know-you game, and enjoyed an abundance of flavored teas. We have three more Tea Parties coming up that will help us get to know our pastor's wife, Mary Brizzi. Please make sure you have RSVP'd to attend one: Nov. 3, Nov. 8, and Nov. 10 from 6:30 to 8 pm at Willa Kerby's house. We have a busy Easter Weekend! Tomorrow, Saturday the 23rd, will be our community egg hunt at 11:00 for all kids through the 3rd grade.

We have two special Easter services on Sunday. The youth have put together a sunrise service to begin at 7:00 am at the church. Our Easter Cantata service will begin at 10:00 am. We invite you all to join us as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord!

Sunday May 1st - Thursday May 5th

A National Day of Prayer Event on the Berryville Town Square

Committee Chairperson Bonnie Roediger is announcing Sunday, April 10th as “Sign Up Sunday” for The 2nd Annual Carroll County Bible Reading Marathon. Volunteers are asked to sign up for an individual 15 minute time or to schedule a block of time for their group to participate in this 91 plus hour National Day of Prayer Event. Contact Bonnie Roediger at 870-350-0865 to sign up, or be a representative for your church, business or organization.

The National Day of Prayer Events in Carroll County start Friday, April 29th on the Square in Berryville with Concerts of Prayer from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. “The Awakening”, Youth Event, will be held in the Bobcat Gymnasium on Saturday April 30th begining at 6:00 p.m.

The Bible Reading Marathon is from Sunday May 1st through Thursday May 5th.

A Prayer Breakfast will be hosted at the Towering Oaks Family Life Center Thursday morning May 5th at 7:00 a.m.- on the National Day of Prayer.

The next Bible Reading Marathon and National Day of Prayer Events committee meeting will be on Monday, April 4th at Beaver Lake Baptist Church. Call for Directions and information to attend. GOD IS STILL IN THE LIFE-CHANGING BUSINESS!

A group of ladies from the Russellville Teen Challenge Ministries visited our church last Sunday. WOW! The testimonies of how God changed their lives is awesome and inspiring. If the love of God can break the bondages of abuse and addiction that these ladies had fallen into, then He can do it for me, for my family, for you, for your family and for our church!

In the United Methodist Church across the nation we are struggling with a lack of growth, a lack of relevancy and a general spiritual malaise. We are studying methods (we are methodist, after all) of how we can reverse this trend we are in. Perhaps, these ladies from Teen Challenge can teach us a thing or two.

Thing one: It is not about us! Where have I heard that before? Maybe our problem is in the "we". We our searching for a way that we can deliver ourselves. "Ain't gonna happen. Nope!" Only God through the power of the Holy Spirit will deliver us. "We" need to get out of the way and follow the principles and direct commands that God has given us. Please allow me to suggest a few: Disciplined prayer and fasting with humility, Extravagant giving in the spirit of generosity, Sacrificial service to one another remembering that the Scripture implores us to consider others' needs as more important than our own, Complete forgivness knowing that no one could ever sin against us more than we have sinned against God....

Ok, I know that was more than a few, but I could go on.

You get the point.

And, if this seems overwhelming, just pick one, start working on that one and you will finally get there. Me too!

Thing two: It is ALL about God through Jesus Christ! I was struck by the testimony from each lady that they had a verse they were "standing on." Do you have a Scripture verse that you are standing on? I mean, when life throws stuff at you do you immediately begin to stand on the truth of God's Word? Please allow me to give you a few (or more) illustrations: When there is too much month at the end of your pay check do you panic, despair or curse your stingy employer; or do you "stand" on the Word of God which says, "My God will supply all your needs in Christ Jesus...." When you are sick and tired of being sick and tired do you rely on the promise of God that "He Himself bore our sickness and carried away our disease?" What about when you are struggling with an important decision (and they are all important when they concern us personally), do you trust that God will give to you wisdom from above without finding fault?

Once again, I could go on.

You get the point.

And, if this all seems overwhelming, just pick one verse that will remind you of your place in God and He will bring you through. Me too!

I am encouraged to pick out three verses to stand on.

The verse I am standing on to get me through each day: I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13 (KJV).

The verse I am standing on for all my tomorrows: "I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, " plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV).

The verse I am standing on for my eternity: Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2 (NIV).

I'm sitting here thinking about last Sunday's sermon message. Well, I'm actually thinking, "What was last Sunday's message?" I really should know. After all, I preached it. I remember it was good...I think. At least, I remember some people said it was good. And by, 'some', I mean more than one. It could have been less than two. I'm not really sure.

Does that ever happen to you? You leave a great worship service, hear a great message with Scripture readings that move your heart and enlighten your mind, but sometime that afternoon can't even remember the broader topic of the sermon?

If I were a really mean pastor, I would quiz people on their way out. They shake my hand and say, "Good sermon, preacher." I reply, "I'm glad you liked it. Tell me, what was meaningful about it and what are three areas in your life where you can apply the principles you learned today?" Hahahaha! Wouldn't that be fun? Yes, it would be fun. It wouldn't work, though, because it would take so long for the people to leave the church that the Baptist would beat me to the buffet.

Besides, I am not likely to ask that question because so many blank stares and stammerings would leave me with a preacher's complex. (I'm a little insecure like that.)

So, why then, did I bring it up?

To make the point that, even though, every sermon message has a 'take away', we don't always take it away; and to segue into the 'take away' for this week's blog: How to hold on to the take away.

There are things you can do during the service to help you retain and internalize the main point of the sermon message, like, STAY AWAKE! I know. Sometimes the heat is blaring or you had a late night out with friends (fellowship is a spiritual activity, too) or the sermon is just plain boring - yikes! But God has a word for you - a take away - even in a boring sermon. It must be true because God allows so many of them every Sunday. Or so I've heard.

Some other helpful tips are: take notes, follow along in your Bible (don't worry, in the United Methodist Church we provide one for you right in the pew), pantomime the preacher's words as he or she is saying them. Wait, forget that last one.

The most helpful tip, though, comes right out of the Bible. Go figure! Oh, btw, I remembered what the message was about last Sunday: The Sermon On the Mount, from which this most helpful tip comes from. The Scripture passage from Matthew 7:21-27, says that we are to put God's Word into practice. That way it will become a part of you. You will be a "walking witness" of God's Word. Also, James 1:22 says that we are to be doers of the Word, not just hearers. Finally, Romans 12:2 says that we will be transformed by the renewing of our mind. So, after the sermon mull it around in your head, compare it with other Scriptures, meditate and think about it. I guarantee, (and by "guarantee", I mean that it is a promise of God), that you will be transformed by even the smallest amount of God's Word wrapped in the most boring human delivery system.

Finally (part duex), I am by no means advocating boring sermons. Intentionally delivering a boring sermon, I think, is a preacher's worst sin. However, if God could speak through a jackass, He can speak through your preacher - just sayin'.

Now, go out there and practice what you heard preached!

Is there such a thing as "bloggers block"?

And do I have it?

Yes and yes!

This is a dreadful prognosis. I am only on my second blog - ever.

Here I am staring at my computer for, not the first, not the second, but the third time in two days. Finally, realizing that there is no "stuff" in my head wanting to get out.

There is no stuff in my head. (period)

Not really. Just kidding. Haha!

Are you still there?

Good.

Stay with me and I will promise you two things:

#1. This will end soon, and

#2. A point will be made.

As it turns out, Google informs me that there is such a thing as blogger's block and gives me 10 surefire ways to overcome it. Three of them are useful for our spiritual lives.

For the last several weeks I've been preaching on "The Sermon On The Mount" from Matthew 5, 6, and 7 and think that the Church has a "block" to living in accordance with the principles put forth.

Don't believe me? Well, consider your honest answer to the following questions:

Do you have trouble being happy when you are persecuted?

Is it hard for you to do good things for your enemies? And by "enemies" I don't just mean the terrorist who wants to make you dead, but the person you see everyday at work that "just gets on your nerves".

Is your lifestyle described as one of prayer, fasting, service, forgivness and extravagant giving?

I thought so! So, what are some ways we can beat the "block"?

First, stop focusing on your block and start thinking about establishing flow - the flow of the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 (NIV) says, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you...." I challenge you to go through the book of Acts and see how many times and in what circumstances the people of God were "filled with the Spirit". The Holy Spirit loves to flow through acts of prayer, fasting, service, forgivness and extravagant giving.

Second, drop the fear. Yes, you do have fear. Admit it. You are one big scaredy-cat. Ha ha. Me too! We are scared of what people will think, what will I look like, I might loose all my friends, or God might make me be a missionary to Africa? (Btw, you can be at ease about that last one. The African church is exploding. They are sending more missionaries to America than we are sending there. So, if you did go to Africa, they would just send you back here.) Maybe your fear is that living the "Sermon on the Mount" won't work, then you will look foolish or bring shame to God. Whatever your fear, I refer you to the first point. Also, consider the Bible's promise that love overcomes fear. The more you love God and the more of God's love that flows through you; the less fear. It is like light in darkness. Where there is light, dark is displaced. Where there is love, fear is displaced.

Third, Understand the stages of the writing process. Or for our purpose, understand that spiritual maturity comes in stages. Even though these are the core principles of Christianity, God doesn't expect that you will live them out "all at once". Spiritual maturity is, well, a maturing process. For example, it might take you a few weeks before you can actually do something nice for that irritating person at work. But, if you pray for him or her everyday you will begin to mature spiritually.

You might not be able to fast all food for even a day or two, but you could fast a favorite food one day every week, and you will be in the maturing process. Oh, and don't give me the doctor excuse. I am willing to bet that there is something in your diet your doctor would be glad for you to give up.

You might not be able to travel overseas to serve God in a remote jungle village, but you can ask your pastor (hint, hint) if there is anything you could do to help the church fulfill its mission in your community.

You might not be able to give large sums of money to the work of the gospel, but you could increase your giving by a percent or two, and you will be on the road to living the "Sermon on the Mount".

The grace of God forgives and empowers. So, beat the "block" and go out there in the grace of God which empowers you to do all that God has called you to do, and to be all that He has called you to be!

Now, that irritating person at work doesn't stand a chance!

Wait a minute! Is that irritating person at work you? Boy, will your workmates be surprised now that you are flowing in the Spirit!

Cultivating THE Ubiquitous 1-1

Following is the first of what will be, at least, a weekly blog entry of stuff that is in my head, but didn't make it out of my mouth during the message delivery. Shall I say, "things given to me under the inspiration of God's Holy Spirit"? No, too many of you know me. I could never get away with that. Well, let's just say, "musings that God might use to help us better understand Him and our relationship to Him.

Symbols are Cymbals

...Or, at least, they should be.

Last Sunday's message was about the symbols of Christianity. The ones that are common to most Christians: the cross, candle lights, the altar, the Bible, the communion elements, the baptismal font, and even the aisle leading from the altar to our exit doors and into the mission field.

After the service, while pondering the things that I had heard myself say during the sermon message, this thought came to mind, "The symbols of the church should have the same effect as cymbals in a band".

Symbols are cymbals, or, at least, they should be; especially in the Church.

Cymbals in a band are mostly quiet, seen but not heard. Their role is minimal until that one point in the score where the conductor calls upon it to display its purpose. "Bam!" Melodius, but still a bam. The point is made. The cymbal is not the focal point. It is used sparingly. But when used, the cymbal is distinct, clear and concise; yet its effect remains long after its crashing note has dissipated into the air.

Similarly, God uses symbols to reveal Himself to us in distinct, clear and concise ways. Whether it is the stone altar that reminded Jacob of the day he wrestled a blessing from God or the rolled away stone of the tomb of Jesus reverbarating through eternity the victory over death wrested from Satan, symbols provide deep meaning and point us to the eternal message of God's love and saving grace in our lives today - right now - moment by moment. Thank God for symbols. Don't worship them, but don't ignore them. Use them like cymbals to enhance your worship of God and intensify your relationship with God.

Think about it. The cross is the Good News of Jesus Christ: God in the flesh, suffering servant, dead because of sin, alive because of the power of God, victory over the power of death, that same Spirit now living in us who believe - "BAM!" The symbol is played.

Dear Brothers and sisters in Christ,

I wanted to take some time to thank the body of our church for a wonderful weekend of study, worship and fellowship that we shared these past few days. What an encouragement to my spirit it has been!

As I reflect back on the events of this past weekend there is no doubt that while we may be concerned about "numbers", we as a community of faith can take comfort in the fact that we have a mighty God that is at work in the lives of our members! At the home group's that we were blessed to attend I know that healing of hearts took place, the scriptures were opened to our minds and spirits, and words of wisdom from our members was shared. What an awesome time!

In the testimony service on Saturday night voices were raised in praise to the God, and the smile on Margaret's face while leading us was worth the more than I can express. Testimonies of God's hand in the lives of those who share our sanctuary were such a blessing that I wish we would have recorded them on DVD to play over and over whenever we come to those times in our own lives when we are seeking, to be reassured that we have a God that answers prayer, and yes even in 2009 STILL performs miracles!

After that service the youth had an impromptu time of more sharing, a lot of pizza was devoured and time of fellowship was shared.

Then Sunday morning. Is there anything more precious than children singing about their Lord with huge smiles on their faces? Does our Youth not give us hope for the future of our Church? Are we not blessed as a congregation to have a Praise Band that offers a style of worship that appeals to a younger generations(and older ones also!) and can reach out to our community by providing not one but two different ways to worship our Lord? And our Pastor brought it home with a message of getting back to the basics-becoming like that Acts church, building on the foundation set forth from the first days after our Lord made the ultimate sacrifice for me, and you, and all that will call upon his name. Wow.

So many people helped with the preparations and execution of a plan that was inspired by God to bring us back to getting on with the business of being the Body of Christ. If I mentioned them all I would forget someone, so I will just say a huge Thank You to Green Forest United Methodist Church for reaffirming my faith in the Body of Christ at work.

As we reflect on the weekend, and I pray we all do, let us keep in the forefront of our minds the question from Saturday - What can I do to help Green Forest Untied Methodist Church become like the early church?

And more than that, when am I going to do it!

Vacation Bible School Starts Monday!

Our Vacation Bible School program begins this Monday and runs through Friday from 5:30 until 8:30 pm each night. We are excited to welcome all the kids to this year's VBS program, Gadget's Garage! We hope you can join us! The kids will be singing and sharing the scriptures they learn next Sunday during our regular services.

We are building robots on Sunday!

Just a reminder that there will be a robot building party on Sunday after second service! We will be eating pizza, and then assembling as many robots as our imaginations can come up with. Everybody is invited. Bring a change of clothes, though, because there will be paint and glue involved! These robots will be decorating our VBS classrooms next month.

This year's Vacation Bible School theme is "Gadget's Garage." Gadget is a teen inventor, who with his robot friend, Gizmo, will be teaching the kids how Jesus makes all things new. We are inviting all of our kids to stay after church on Sunday, June 28th for lunch and a robot building party.

We would love your help in gathering some supplies we need to build robots and create other inventor workshop decorations. This list comprises some of the items that would be incredibly useful, but if you think of something we may have missed please let us know!

We need:

wire of any kind
nuts, bolts, washers, screws, etc
empty boxes
various tools we can hang up as decoration
extension cords, esp the heavy duty ones (they don't have to work)
broken hoses
circuit boards (even old keyboards we can take apart)

This is a great chance to clear some clutter from your own garage and put it to good use!

Youth Mission Trip

Youth Yard Sale

The Youth will be having a yard sale right here at the church on Saturday the 25th to help raise money for their mission trip in June. If you would like to donate materials for them to sell this Saturday, please bring them by the church office this week, or leave them on the tables in the fellowship hall if the office is closed. Sunrise Service

The Youth has put together the Sunrise Service which will be held this Sunday at 6:30 on the Square. If it is too cold, it will be moved to the church's fellowship hall.

A breakfast will be served in the fellowship hall after the Sunrise Service. Our 8:30 and 11:00 services will be held at their regular times, with an egg hunt for the Children's Service at both services.

The Lay Witness Mission began tonight, and it was a wonderful event! We started by eating and fellowshipping together.

It was a good chance to get to start meeting the members of the LWM team who came to minister to us.

After the meal, we all met in the sanctuary to sing some joyful spirit-filled hymns and to hear the testimonies of some of the LWM Witness Team. We broke off into groups. Each group had a short meeting to discuss what we would like to see happen in the church after the LWM, and to discuss what we would all like to see happen to us personally after the LWM.

The youth met together with the LWM leaders who came to witness to them, and their meeting was so intensely spiritual that many of the kids were moved to tears. There is a powerful message being shared here this weekend.

The adults met back in the sanctuary where we shared our summaries of our discussion. However, the younger kids had a special song to perform for us first. They had learned the song and the dance moves during their group meeting, and were absolutely adorable.

One person from each group came forward to share the answers their group had for the two questions. Collectively, we all agree we want to see unity, bonding, and growth, and to feel like we are all on fire for God within our church family!

The Lay Witness Mission has only just begun. Please make it a point to come and attend as much of it as possible this weekend. Bring your friends and family. As one group leader said tonight, "God has something in store for you here. You don't want to miss it."

Budget Requests: The Finance Committee needs all budget

Best Choice Labels: The church receives 3 cents for every Best
Choice UPC label we mail in. We have to send these in
November for the rebate, and need a minimum of 1,000 labels.
If you have any you would like to contribute, please give them
to Roberta Miller or leave them in the office.

Prayer Requests: If you see a name on the prayer request list
that no longer needs to be there, please let Jennifer know.

Candy: The Children’s Committee appreciates any donations
of candy you are able to make for the All Saints’ Eve Party. If

Smokin’ Hillbilly: (previously Polly’s Diner) on HWY 62 is

This Saturday is distribution day for our September Angel Food orders. We had a huge order, and could really use all the help we can get in getting the food distibuted.

Hey kids, join us for Vacation Bible School at Green Forest United Methodist Church and see how much fun it is to learn to serve Jesus by serving our family, friends, and community!

July 9-11 from 5:30-8:30
July 12 from 3:30 – 6:30
Ages 3-13 (a nursery will be provided for younger kids who need it)

Everybody is invited to join us at 6:30pm on Saturday, July 12 for a God’s Big Backyard BBQ. Bring the family, friends, and neighbors and join us for good food (free), music, fun and fellowship!

Tomorrow, Thursday, June 26, there will a blood drive held here at the church from 4-7 pm. If you are able to donate blood, please think about coming and being a part of this life-saving cause.

Saturday is Green Forest Appreciation Days. Our church will have a booth with carnival games for kids to play, and prizes to give out. The games will run from 4-6pm.

The Men's Breakfast is on Saturday at 8:30am.
